Our mission

Why we're building Steward

Because the most common budgeting system in the world is a spreadsheet that takes more energy than it gives back — and we think you deserve better.

Steward started the way most budgets end: with a spreadsheet. Row 400-something, formulas nobody remembered writing, a “Misc” column doing far too much work, and a monthly ritual of copying everything forward and hoping the totals still added up. The spreadsheet wasn't the problem — the fatigue was. When tracking your money takes this much effort, most people quietly stop. And when you stop looking, money makes its own decisions.

The fix isn't more automation for automation's sake. It's an older, sturdier idea: give every dollar a home before you spend it. Envelope budgeting worked for generations because it made spending decisions in advance, when you were calm — not at the checkout, when you weren't. Steward brings that idea into software as funds: named places your money lives, whether that's Groceries this month or the vacation you're quietly building toward next summer.

We hold one line firmly: guided decision-making, not automated decision-making. Steward will import your transactions, suggest where they belong, project whether a sinking fund is on track, and flag what needs your attention. But it will never file, move, or spend anything on your behalf. Every suggestion waits for your confirmation, because a budget only changes your life if the decisions in it are actually yours. The tool does the bookkeeping; you keep the judgment.

The name says the same thing. A steward looks after what matters on someone else's behalf — carefully, and never with more authority than they're given. That's the role this software plays with your money: you own the decisions, and Steward keeps them organized.

So that's what we're building: budgeting software calm enough to use every day, honest enough to trust with your data, and humble enough to know whose money it is.

What we believe

Four values we won't trade away

Intentionality

Money that has a name has a purpose. Every design decision pushes toward one habit: deciding what your dollars are for before they wander off.

Privacy first

Your finances are among the most personal data you have. We encrypt it, isolate it, and never sell it. Privacy isn't a feature tier — it's the floor.

Human in control

Software should propose; you should decide. Steward never moves money, files a transaction, or changes a budget without your explicit confirmation.

Calm software

No red-alert dashboards, no guilt trips, no gamified streaks. Just clear numbers, gentle guidance, and the quiet confidence of knowing where you stand.

Transparency

How we make money

Simple: subscriptions. Some members pay for Essentials or Premium, and that revenue pays for everything — including the free Manual Mode plan.

That's the entire model. We don't run ads. We don't sell your data, your spending patterns, or “anonymized insights” to brokers, banks, or advertisers. We don't take referral kickbacks for nudging you toward financial products. If Steward ever recommends anything, it's because the math says so — not because someone paid us to say it.

When you're the customer, you're never the product.
